She Trusted Me Before She Trusted Herself

"Confidence doesn't always walk into the room with you. Sometimes it meets you there."
When people see the finished portraits, they usually assume confidence came first.
They imagine someone walking into the studio already feeling beautiful.
Already knowing exactly what to do.
Already believing they belong in front of the camera.
The truth?
That's rarely how it happens.
Most people arrive carrying questions they never say out loud.
"Did I pick the right outfit?"
"Can everyone tell how nervous I am?"
"What if I don't photograph well?"
This session was no different.
"I Was Nervous."
When I asked how she normally feels before a session, her answer was simple.
"Nervous usually. Wondering if I picked the right outfit. Will the camera be able to tell I'm nervous?"
I think so many people can relate to that.
It's easy to believe everyone else walks into a photoshoot feeling confident.
Most don't.
Most are simply hoping they'll recognize themselves in the final photographs.
Trust Came First
One of my favorite questions to ask is,
"What helps those nerves settle once we're shooting?"
Her answer made me smile.
"I've seen what you can do. I know you're not gonna let me leave your studio looking a mess. Anything with your name on it is going to be good."
That kind of trust is something I'll never take for granted.
Because it isn't just about photography.
It's about creating a space where someone feels safe enough to stop overthinking and simply be present.
"Anything with your name on it is going to be good."
The Moment Everything Changed
Every session has a moment.
Sometimes it's subtle.
Sometimes it's loud.
For her...
It happened the moment I turned the back of my camera around.
Her response?
"Once I hear you say, 'Yesss!' and turn the camera around to show the shot, I know it's heat."
Then came the words I hear so often...
"I was shocked. Like...that's me? That's crazy."
Those moments never get old.
Not because of the photograph.
Because I get to watch someone see themselves differently.
Stepping Outside Her Comfort Zone
One session still stands out in her mind.
A boudoir session.
Completely outside of her comfort zone.
She admitted she was incredibly nervous walking in.
But today?
Those photographs remind her of something much bigger.
"It's just a reminder that I'm really that girl when I'm feeling low."
I don't know if there's a better reason to exist as a photographer than that.
A photograph that becomes evidence of who you are on the days you forget.
Her Advice
When I asked what she'd tell someone thinking about booking a session, she didn't hesitate.
"Just book the shoot. You're already beautiful. She's gonna amplify it."
Then she added something that made me laugh.
"Denisha is not mean, y'all. She just locks in and her face gets serious."
She's right.
When the lights come on, I get focused.
But that's because I'm paying attention to every little detail.
The light.
The angles.
Your hands.
Your expression.
Every tiny adjustment is intentional because I want you to walk away with photographs that feel like the very best version of yourself.
A Note From Me
One thing I've learned over the years is that confidence doesn't always come before the session.
Sometimes confidence shows up halfway through.
Sometimes it arrives when someone finally sees the back of the camera.
Sometimes it doesn't hit until they open their gallery days later.
And sometimes...
It becomes the photograph they pull out months—or years—later to remind themselves who they are.
That's why I do what I do.
Because sometimes people don't need to become someone new.
They just need someone to remind them of who they've been all along.
