Sometimes the hardest part isn't stepping in front of the camera. It's believing you're worthy of being seen.
She Almost Didn't Come.
A week before her session, she almost canceled.
Not because she didn't want beautiful photographs.
Not because she wasn't excited.
Because she didn't feel like herself.
Like so many women, she was quietly battling insecurities that no one else could fully see. A recent struggle with hormonal acne had taken a toll on her confidence, and every glance in the mirror reminded her of the things she wished she could change.
In her mind, the timing wasn't right.
She didn't feel beautiful enough.
She didn't feel ready.
If you've ever told yourself, "I'll book the session when my skin clears," or "I'll wait until I lose the weight," you know exactly how that feels.
The Turning Point
Her mom encouraged her to do the session anyway.
She showed her my work.
But it wasn't just the photographs that made the difference.
It was the stories.
She told me later that seeing me openly talk about my own insecurities as a woman made her feel comfortable enough to take the chance.
She realized she wasn't walking into a studio with someone who expected perfection.
She was walking into a space where she could simply be herself.
Reading those words stopped me in my tracks.
Because as photographers, we spend so much time talking about lighting, posing, cameras, and editing.
But none of those things are why she booked.
She booked because she felt understood.
And that's something I'll never take for granted.
Behind the Lens
The first few minutes of almost every session look the same.
There's a little nervous laughter.
Questions like, "What do I do with my hands?"
A few deep breaths.
Then something shifts.
We start talking.
We laugh.
I guide every pose, every movement, every expression.
Little by little, the camera fades into the background.
And confidence begins to take its place.
Watching that transformation happen is one of my favorite parts of this job.
Not because someone suddenly becomes beautiful.
Because they begin to see the beauty that was already there.
In Her Own Words
After the session, she shared something I'll never forget.
"A week leading up to this photo shoot, I was so anxious and nervous I almost didn't want to go, but I'm so glad I did. Something about taking pictures and feeling good and pretty is a feeling that's unmatched."
"Seeing a female photographer get on social media and really open up about the insecurities as a woman made me feel a whole lot more comfortable doing this shoot."
"This shoot was nothing but a vibe and a huge confidence booster."
"Laughing, smiling, posing, feeling beautiful was a feeling that I had been missing."
"Now that I'm a little bit more comfortable and a lot more confident in my skin, I'm very excited to see what we're do next."
Those words mean more to me than any compliment about my photography ever could.
Because they remind me that this experience has never been just about creating beautiful images.
It's about creating space for someone to reconnect with themselves.
The Portraits
These photographs are beautiful.
But what I love most isn't the lighting.
It isn't the styling.
It isn't the posing.
It's knowing the woman you're looking at almost talked herself out of being in them.
Instead, she chose to show up.
And because she did, she'll always have these photographs to remind her of who she is—even on the days when confidence feels harder to find.
The Story Behind These Portraits
As I looked back through these images, I couldn't help but smile.
When I first planned this set, I simply wanted to create something with an editorial feel. A backdrop made entirely of newspaper pages. Clean. Creative. Different.
But after hearing her story, I saw these photographs differently.
The newspaper no longer felt like just a backdrop.
It felt like the story she'd been telling herself.
That she wasn't ready.
That her skin wasn't good enough.
That she should wait.
And somewhere between the first frame and the last, that story began to change.
These portraits aren't just beautiful because of the lighting, the styling, or the posing.
They're beautiful because they capture the moment she stopped believing the headlines she'd been telling herself.
And started writing a new one.
A Note from Denisha
This is why I do what I do.
Not because I love creating magazine-worthy portraits—although I absolutely do.
I do this because I've been the woman who questioned what she saw in the mirror.
I've battled my own insecurities.
I've wondered if I was enough.
So when a woman walks into my studio carrying those same feelings, I understand.
My goal isn't to change who you are.
It's to help you see what has been there all along.
If you've been waiting for clearer skin...
If you've been waiting until you've lost the weight...
If you're waiting until life slows down...
If you're waiting until you feel confident...
Maybe this is your reminder that confidence isn't something you have to find before booking the session.
Sometimes...
Confidence begins the moment you decide to show up.
I'd love to help you write your next chapter.
